King Boston Art

Update: Monday, March 4, 2019

The Art Committee has chosen The Embrace as the winning design for the Boston Common!

We published a King RFQ in December 2017, received 126 submissions over the next few months. We then selected five finalists in May 2018, gave them these guidelines. Here is our project overview. We published the five finalist designs at the Boston Public Library in Copley Square and the Bolling Building in Dudley Square from September 18th to October 16th, 2018, giving the public that one month to provide input. The Art Committee has since reviewed public input and has interviewed the artist teams. We are now working with the City of Boston on a feasibility study for each of the designs, and we're coordinating with the new master plan for the Boston Common. We hope to announce the design winner in February or March. There will then be another opportunity for public input on the winning design, including a public forum with the artists. There then might be a revised design, based on public input. We expect this process and the final construction to take 12-18 months from the announcement of the winner, based on which design gets chosen, and based on public input.

Here are the designs from our five finalists:

Here is some recent press on the designs: Boston Globe, WBUR, Curbed Boston.
